In this introductory class on smart thermostats, we show how they work, keep us comfortable and make an impact on our world. We begin with an introduction to the history of thermostats and explain what makes a thermostat "smart". We cover the key internal thermostat components and look at the technology used to accommodate communication between smart thermostats and the internet. We then focus on the capabilities of smart thermostats, including the basic functions of every smart thermostat, the operations, and the benefits of using sensor technology to integrate smart thermostats into smart home ecosystems. Then we focus on some advanced features in modern smart thermostats. This module offers a brief look into the profound impact that smart thermostats have had on our society as a whole by improving the way humankind approaches internal climate control. But there are drawbacks as well, as data management associated with thermostat usage has security risks and may threaten the privacy and safety of users.
